Marisa received an overdenture like Becky, but she found it harder to adjust since she had never worn lower dentures before. By retaining her remaining teeth, we gave her time to adapt, and she has the option to switch to implant-supported dentures in the future, which offer even more stability. Implant-supported dentures are a flexible option for those who struggle with regular dentures. After a suitable adaptation period, Marisa’s dentures provided her with a renewed sense of normalcy, allowing her to comfortably smile, talk, and enjoy meals, tasks that are often taken for granted.

Like Becky, Marisa also received an overdenture. However, her experience was a bit different. While Becky adapted quickly to her denture and felt comfortable wearing it—except at night when she took it out—Marisa found it harder to adjust. Becky had worn dentures before, which made the transition smoother, but Marisa had never used lower dentures before.
Adapting to Dentures:
It’s common for patients to need time to adjust to dentures especially if they have never had them before. For some, like Marisa, it takes longer. In fact, a small percentage of patients may never fully adapt to traditional dentures.
As we retained Marisa’s remaining teeth to anchor her denture, this gave her more time to gradually adapt. Additionally, the dentures we made can also be used over implants in the future, offering flexibility.
Consider Implant-Supported Dentures:
For patients who struggle with regular dentures, implant-supported dentures can be a great option. Implants are titanium screws placed into the jawbone. Once they heal, they fuse with the bone, providing strong support for dentures. This type of denture offers excellent stability and retention, making it easier to eat, speak, and smile confidently.
Marisa's Future Options:
Marisa was informed of all treatment options from the start. She decided to first try adapting to her dentures. However, if she ever feels she cannot fully adjust, implants are a suitable option for her, and her current denture—designed to fit her face and provide proper function—can be used over the implants.
Implants in Malta:
In Malta, we only offer CE-marked implants, which meet European Union quality and safety standards, ensuring the best care for our patients.
Things to Consider with Implants:
Not Suitable for Everyone: Implants are not recommended for patients with uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smokers, or growing patients. The possibility of getting dental implants can motivate patients to make important lifestyle changes, such as improving their diet or quitting smoking, to become suitable candidates for the procedure.
